Stripping Shellac

The brass hardware in our parlor floor is covered with shellac. I cleaned some of the knobs with denatured alcohol, but the fumes are nasty.
Is there any non-toxic way to remove shellac from metal (like Martha Stewart's baking soda trick)?
Thanks.

try vinegar. might work.

Vinegar won't remove shellac; you could use PeelAway 7, which is considered nonhazardous (though, y'know, you don't want to eat it).

denatured alcohol will take it off quickly & easiy provided it's just shellac.

We had shellac on some of our doorknobs and Marthas boiling method removed that too.
