something living in my ceiling
last night I heard something rooting around above the ceiling on the top floor of my house. then, whatever it was to a leak, and I kid you not, it started dripping through the ceiling and onto the floor. this really freaked me out - I have no idea what kind of animal this is - large rodent? cat? anyone else have creatures in their ceilings under the roof?
who should I call?

An exorcist. There are lots of priests who are trained exorcists in Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. Ask around at your local Catholic Church.

As long as you don't hear the head spinning around, you're fine.
Tip: don't stand by any open windows overlooking stone staircases.

Maybe they're bats.

A friend had one racoon, which after landlord neglect turned into a family of racoons. They ate a hole through the kitchen ceiling (sheetrock). Once he saw a little paw reaching to get what he was cooking. Obviously, he was far from the food, but it was enough to finally get the landlord out and take care of it.

Depending on where you are, could be raccoons, squirrels, rats, or something else. In my case it seems to be squirrel(s). I never notice but apparently my neighbor can hear them. :-)
Suggest you have a pest control company come and check it out (and hopefully get rid of it). It's nice and toasty warm in there, i expect, and the critter's not likely to leave on it's own....

You really need to find out what it is and how it got there.
I had the same issue a few years back. Didn't do anything cause after a month it stopped.
Turns out the reason it stopped was because it (rat) died.
Imagine trying to find the source of the smell by crawling towards the direction of the smell.

We had squirrels (we think) in the attic last year, and this year racoons (seen on top of the roof by neighbors). One saw the raccoon fall off the roof and we haven't heard them since, but found animal droppings in the attic. You should hire an exterminator/animal control guy to get rid of them, then a roofer to patch up any holes through which they might be entering. Also see if there are any overhanging trees they are climbing to get onto the roof and have those pruned back. Expect this to be a recurring problem.

I lived in the converted servants' quarters of a mansion during college, and we had a raccoon. First all of our christmas chocolate got eaten, but the wrappers left behind. Then, the rustling noises. Then -- little eyes peeping at me through a hole in the sheetrock!!! I called animal control and they came and trapped him, and took him away. I shot a whole roll of B&W film of him. He was a beauty, but I was 19, and living in servants' quarters, and a DRAMA major, and I thought it was all just too poetic. You, on the other hand, are a grownup and getting peed on! So, not so poetic.
Perhaps the city can be of help to you? http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/browse/browse-animal.shtml
Good luck,
