Roof Hatches

Has anyone replaced an old roof hatch with a new hatch/skylight combo? If so, how do you like it? How do you feel about it security-wise? Thanks for any input.

Am in the process of using a Bilco hatch with skylight (http://www.bilco.com/foundations/store/shopdetail.asp?product=1GS-1). Much heavier build than hatches that are offered by the skylight manufacturers.

Guest 11:09, thank you for posting that! I didn't even know those existed. Fab idea for getting more light on top floor. I'm bookmarking it as we speak. How much did it cost?

Will confirm. My contractor mentioned that it would cost around $800.

when we moved into our south slope house we replaced the solid roof hatch (coxloft) with a clear skylight/hatch that we can open and close using a long rod. we love it. it gives us lots more light at the top of the stairs. for security, i installed a small set of iron bars to prevent entry from the roof. the drawback is that to get on the roof i have go outside. if i were more creative, i might have put on some hinged bars w/lock, so, when i needed to get on the roof from inside the house, i could unlock the bars and get up there. oh well.

Does anyone know what FDNY thinks about all this? Does DoB have anything to guide us?

If you are looking for a custom unit instead
of a standard Bilco type unit - go to this
website -
www.newenglandskylights.com

They hand craft custom skylight hatches, and
can make just about anything.
Look at the unit they did at the Llenroc mansion at Cornell Univ. on the historical page.

Just want to throw in my two cents. Closing off a roof hatch with iron bars is very dangerous! In a multi-family building like a brownstone, the roof hatch is an emergency exit in case of fire. And barring the hatch is illegal. I don't know what the law requires for a single family, but please check before your seal off an intended emergency exit.
