Plumbing question re: PVC
Is PVC allowed in new construction 2 family brick buildings in Brooklyn? What about adding a bathroom in an existing 2 family brownstone using PVC to the exisitng cast iron?
Comments
No, PVC is not allowed in NYC. It melts in the event of a fire.

This question comes up so often and every time there's someone who doesn't know diddly who points the OP in the wrong direction. Below I provide a link to the relevant section of the NYC building code. Scroll to the 14th page of the PDF or the actual page number 222. It is clear that PVC is allowed in residential buildings of 3 stories or less.

Thanks for the info John. So the way I read it as long as the building is less then 3 floors you can use PVC, even if its a 4 or 6 family building?

That's the way it reads, though I have seen references here and elsewhere to "two family" homes and below as being allowed to use PVC. With regard to the number of stories, it's "three stories or less", not "less than three stories". It would also appear from the link below that the basement, or garden, level DOES count as a story.

Thanks, John, for the link.
I believe that "two-family" rule that is referred to has to do with the fact that NYC DOB defines "residential" as a one or two family dwelling.
Three or more is defined as a "multi-family".
For what it's worth, that whole PVC thing is going to change soon when NYC takes on the National Plumbing Code in the near future.

Master Plumber,
Is that one of changes that are happening in June next year?
Posted by: johnife at November 28, 2007 5:50 PM
Yes, but I know the date keeps getting pushed back.
Has something been made official?

That's what it says here (well, July, actually, not June):

"Inspection went fine"
Was it a self-certification or did you actually witness a plumbing inspector in the house?

we thought it would be self certified aswell ,but we were there when the inspector came . Rude fellow
