Hole in wood floor
A section of our very old wood (seems soft--maybe pine)floor on the parlor floor of a brownstone has splintered horribly in one spot along the edges and there's a long hole---maybe 12"x2". The planks are 4 1/4 inch wide. Any suggestion of what to do, and what kind of person to call

You'll need to replace the board (which is probably pine). This is quite simple and shouldn't cost much money. A circular saw will remove it easily. With a new plank you'll need to cut out the underside of the tongue portion of the plank before installation. Just refinish and your done. Any floor person can do this quickly and cheaply.

you dont even need to replace the entire floor board...you can just patch the missing piece with a new piece (or better yet find an old piece of pine in a one of the hundred dumpsters in brooklyn)....these old floors are out of level and full of imperfections - the patch will look cool. indeed it is a small job, but for the right person to do a nice job, it will probably cost somewhere around $200 to patch the piece and match the stain/finish so it blends into your existing floor.
