Contractor for Basement Renovation
I am thinking of finishing our basement to make the space more usable. I think most of the work is pretty basic, but I am looking for someone to give us a hand with ventilating the basement (we don't have windows down there), putting up sheet rock over the stone walls and adding some electrical outlets. I think the remainder we could handle ourselves. Anyone have a recommendation for someone who handles this kind of work?

A better question is anyone have any experience in finishing a brownstone basement? Costs associated? ease/difficulty. Best results.

Can't you live the stone walls exposed?
Are they in bad shape to be tuck pointed and sealed?

I would gladly recommend Matt Gannon, did ours and many others in the Slope. His cell is

Tell him happy holidays from Pryce.

I used Impact Remodeling to do a spiral staircase from ground level, tile floor, framed walls, sheetrocking...with some built-ins and and it cost around $20k all in. Email me at takingnames at gmail.com if you need contact info.

I'm going through this process with my basement. It is pretty expensive, but not insanely so: >35K for a complete reno, including demolishing the old concrete slab, laying a new slab with vapor barrier, building out a new full bath, laying new floor tile, demolishing and rebuilding a closet under the stairs, and new sheetrock for the walls, plus a bunch of electrical work. (Apparently a lot of brownstones have very thin basement slabs that need to be demolished and repoured to avoid future cracking etc. It was a very interesting, and expensive, piece of learning.) Once the work is done, I will be happy to post a recommendation for the contractor.

Thank you all for your input. Geekspice, I would love to hear how the renovation goes when all is done. What is your expected completion date?
Thanks again!

Supposedly December 31, but it's looking more like Jan 15th right now.

Dear Geekspice,
Did you ever finish up on the basement? If so, please help with a recommendation for a contractor to do the same. We just received a $50K quote from a cement guy to dig out the basement 2 ft (to clear an 8 ft ceiling), underpin the foundation, vapor barrier + pebbles and then pour new slab. Plumbing will be a separate cost (new drains, sump pump, etc.) and no finishing touches included (e.g., electrical, tiles, sheet rock, etc.) Just a "NEW", deeper, unfinished basement. 50K = ouch.

I had challenging kitchen remodel completed by Lino. The building is a pre-war presenting many difficulties. Lino was incredible in completing the work and providing a masterful job on the cabinets, walls, ceilings, floors, and trim mouldings.
