Construction Noise?
Someone is doing a gut renovation on our street...there's been lots of noise, but most of it is the usual. However, yesterday they started up a portable cement mixer, and ran it from about 7:30 - 4. It started again today at 7:30. It's insanely loud, and kind of driving me crazy. There has been a fair share of construction in their neighborhood, and I'm used to the noise, but this is unreal, and I haven't seen any of the other houses in the area use it. Is there anything I can do? They definitely have construction permits.

Cal the City's 311 line and register a complaint. Tell them it's not the hours it's running - it's the decibel level.

Construction is allowed from 7:00AM through 6:00PM... and even weekends if it's a residential building.
Best bet would be to find something to do outside of your home until this ungodly phase of the work is completed...

I am just wondering what do you expect to accomplish. Obviously, the homeowner has already signed a contract to have this work done and I doubt the construction company will go out and purchase a brand new truck/equipment just because the noise level is too loud for you. Do you expect the homeowner to stop construction, lose a substantial amount of money and time and then look for another contractor that has the equipment that will produce a noise level that you can live with. Please try to be practical and have a little compassion. I am sure the work will not last more than a few days.

All contractors must file a noise mitigation plan especially those using just this kind of portable equipment. If the decibel levels are say 10db over normal ambient street levels they are in violation. Why should you tolerate the noise? They will pack up their equipment and bother someone else tommorrow. Much of the noise can be deaded using a simple sound blanket, but they are too lazy, ignorant, or just plain inconsiderate. Call 311 and make a DEP noise complaint. Here is a site with information about construction noise.

Talk to the owner. We've done renovations twice and didn't want the neighbos to hate us. Both times we asked the contractor not to start work until after 8:00 AM. They were fine with that.
