Tin Ceilings
This might be a dumb question but don't flame me please- I'm just trying to learn.
Is it possible to put recessed lighting in with a tin ceiling? First of all, is it architecturally possible. Secondly, would that just look ugly?
If you have tin ceilings and want more overhead light, what are your options?

How about just adding sconces, two on each side, of the walls in that room so you don't have to mess with the tin ceiling. Then you have the main fixture in the middle of the ceiling (which is there, right?) and the two sconces on each side of the room. That should give you lots more light.

Ive seen it done so I assume its possible to do safely.
I think it looking nice or not will depend upon how high the ceiling, what kind of fixtures you use and how they are placed. It can definitely look fine if its done properly.

Is it an original tin ceiling? If not, I don't think it's a big deal for you to very neatly use a saw-saw (reciprocating saw) or a jig saw to cut out a nice circle, and to use a re-modeler recessed fixture that has a nice flange that covers the toothcuts on the tin. Sounds like you might need an electrician though.

OP here - it's 10ft ceilings and they are original. I'll talk to a contractor about it- thank you!

My understanding is that tin cielings are not "original" in that they were oftentimes used to cover up failing plaster cielings, not unlike folks who put in dropped cielings today, to hide similar issues. I'm not saying they are not worth protecting, or enjoying their aesthetic value, just noting there may be a difference between that and pier mirrors and dish closets that were built to and for your house exactly. You might not feel so so guilty for cutting a hole in one of them if you knew it came along 20 years after your house was built.
