Stucco Madness
New brownstoner here. The previous owners of my home seemed to just love stucco - it's all over the walls, moldings and ceilings in a few of the rooms. Any advice on how to remove it from walls, wood door framings; moldings; marble fireplaces, ceilings etc. without having to sheetrock the whole place, as a contractor recommended? There are so many beautiful original features in my home, my preference is to stay w/ plastering.

If you're not going to sheetrock your only choice is to scrape the stucco down and skimcoat your walls and strip the woodwork. I hate stucco too. I think it was invented to hide cracks. Plus it's easy to use so you don't have to be skilled. It's thrifty minded home repair. ( yuck! )

Do what Rick says. Don't put up sheetrock. It would actually be more extensive and expensive to tear down the whole walls and put up new ones like that. On Forum in similar posts in the past, it really seems every contractor out there always tells homeowners to tear down plaster walls and put up sheetrock. Like in every single case across the board, regardless of condition or circumstance. It's weird.
Love the "thrify minded home repair"! It's a new way to go for the new property owner, post-bubble.

It wasn't in a brownstone, but an older property in Bay Ridge. My sister's contractor just put 1/4" sheetrock right over the old stuccoed walls. They took off the old woodword, put on the new layer of shhetrock, and then put the molding back on. There was a bit of readjusting, but I don't think it was as time consuming and dusty as scraping the old stucco or ripping down walls and replacing the whole sheetrock.
