Refinishing Hardwood Floors

I plan on having the hardwood floors in my coop sanded and refinished with a water-based finish and am wondering if it is totally safe to stay in my apt. during the process. Also, any suggestions on flooring contractors would be appreciated. Thanks.

how will you walk around in the apartment?

They can use a fast drying stain and you "could" be in your apartment while it's going on, but why would you want to. Go stay at a friend's place for 2 days. It's much more healthy.

Water based doesn't have nasty smells though, fortunately.

I did the same thing. I did half of my floors and then a few weeks later when I finished the work in the other half I did the rest of the floors. I used Sohm Flooring which is a one man operation and he uses only water based products. I would come home at night and the smell was never overwhelming so it is definitely possible to stay in the apartment. Call Glenn - (718)273-2217

RMD flooring were great. Water based finish didn't whiff but the dark stain they used did.

I wouldn't recommend staying in the apartment... that stuff is toxic ( water base or not)... your head will be pounding and your ears ringing.

Try Sean at Old Oak Flooring. They only do flooring. He is reasonable and does good work (and he has that great irish brogue). 646-662-5724

Thanks for the advice. I plan on having the living room and kitchen done firt and then a few weeks later the bedrooms. I decided to have the floors done using water-based because of health conditions so I guess I will need find someplace to stay.

I have white oak floors and would also appreciate any thoughts and opinions on what color stain would look good with white walls. I tend to like a more uniform look so that's why I'm going with a stain and not natural. I also tend to be boring when it comes to wall color and usually choose a white or off-white color for the walls.

Thanks again.

I have white oak floors as well and went with their natural color(s). The nice thing about the water-based products is that they don't get darker with age like oil does. My walls are all painted grey and I think that if I hadn't gone with the natural look on the floors the grey would have been too bland.
