Post Mount Gas Lamp
While laying bluestone on the front patio of my Brownstone, I decided to wire my lamp post for light. Well, to my surprise, the original gas line is still in tact and connected to my gas meter.
My questions are, Do I need to talk with con-ed, or the city to get a gas lamp running? What kind of post mount lamp do I need? Where do I get it? How much should it cost? How much would it cost per year to run? Do they run ALL YEAR LONG??
Anyone with info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

qn came up a while ago - they are not terifically expensive to run but produce some tons of Carbon dioxide each year ==> view them as "this homeowner doesn't give a *%&^$ about the environment" signs lit up in rather pathetically useless light.

how much more carbon dioxide than the people running their mouth like you?? 11:30??
They aren't that much more wasteful than regular lights that emit and waste energy as well.
Not exactly sure where'd you get them. Home depot doesn't carry them.

My limestone townhouse had one too, but some bum kicked it and I ended up with a gas leak. I converted to electric. A gas lamp is cheaper that an electric bulb. It operates like a pilot light. You can have it always on at a dim flame or manually increase the flame. There may be automatic features also. It is definitely worth it, it is very beautiful and will make your home distinguished. 11:30 PM is clueless... A gas lamp is more environmentally friendly than an electric bulb.

I am 12:10... you don't need to get con ed involved... just get a plumber to do the job right. There are some nice gas lamps in brooklyn heights.

OP Here,
Thanks 12:14.
Where in Brooklyn Heights? What's the approximate cost?
Is it something I could do myself, or do I really need a plumber?

OP Again,
thanks for the previous threads. I've seen them b/4, hence my need to post here. Nothing states "where" I can get the gas lamps specifically. Nor how much I should expect to spend. I'm looking for Specifics.
Thanks in advance!

There's lots of information on the Keyspan website:

I had a similar experience when we bought our CG Brownstone. The gas line was intact but the glass was cracked, and the mantles missing and it was obvious that it had not been lit in many years.
I called ConEd and they sent someone out who scratched his head and said that they did not really deal with this and then showed me how to turn the valve on.
I found new mantles at local hardware stores, but could not get it to light. In the end I replaced the burner. Once I got it lit, it has kept burning for several years without any maintenance.
I tried to find the website I bought everything from, here's a different site with the same stuff

Thanks 4:22!
Finally, someone that answers the questions asked, and doesn't bother with opinionated banter! You're a god send!

12:10 again... I have seen them in the heights in a dead end private streets.. I believe it is Love lane or near there... I am not sure of the cost, but if you own a brownstone it should not be an issue. I would get a plumber...

I've seen them on the street PS 8 is on in the Heights. There's also one on either Clinton or Henry, don't know the cross street but it's that fabulous corner building with the goldfish pond and nautical gear on the roofdeck.
