Legality of Outdoor Propane Heater

I know many people have those outdoor cafe propane heaters in their backyards and we would love one to extend our outdoor season. But what is the legality of these things? We have a brownstone and a backyard with a deck right off the back. Thanks for any input.

This is from NYC Dept. of Buildings relating to businesses. But I bet the fire dept has there own set of rules.

these heaters produce more CO2 than a small car- if you care about the environment you won't get one. and you should boycott all those restaurants that use them too.
