How do you keep your place clean?
We are very fortunate to have 3 floors of a brownstone. How on earth do people keep their place clean? I am a stay-at-home parent of 2 young children. I vacuum every day, do laundry, keep the kitchen counters clear, wipe down bathroom, etc. But there is so much to clean - all the shutters are dust collectors as is the staircase, and the walls are filthy. Not to mention the stoop, outdoor areas. What do people do?

hire a cleaning lady to come every couple of weeks. there is no other way.

low lighting and selective amnesia work for me. you know how people often complain that townhouses don't get enough sunlight? not me.

We follow both suggestions above. Start cleaning when your kids get older and leave you more time.

Don't where shoes in the house.
Not sure why your walls are filthy?
Have a cleaning person do a thorough clean at least 1x month, and you can do the regular upkeep on the kitchen and baths. Vacuum on the weekend if you have carpet. And dont' get too worried about it, they're huge houses, often with 1000 sq. ft a floor... too much to keep it all spotless regularly if you have kids too, without help.

if you have small kids and an old house with lead paint, it is a good idea to do whatever you can to keep the dust down.

Vacuuming is great but make sure you have a good filter on it - it'll keep more dust out of the air.
Dust with damp re-usable rag.
Research air purifiers. I've read conflicting things on their ozone output but have heard that they help pull dust out of the air.
Evaluate what catches the dirt and think if you really need it.
Second not wearing shoes in the house.

Are you leaving windows open? I find that the more I leave the windows open, the more there is fine coat of black something (soot?) on everything. Regularly replace the air filter on your air handler, and invest in high quality filters. And good luck!
