Fall maintenance/Preparing for winter
For the past few years, in preparation for winter, I've done the following maintenance around the house during the weekend of day light savings:
turn off the water line leading to the backyard spigot
clean gutters
check the window calking
change the smoke alarm batteries
And if I'm feeling really ambitious I'll also clean out the bath tub trap
What else do folks do to prepare for winter?

...don't forget to turn off the water for the garden....

Right 8:02! Thanks for the reminder. The water for the garden. I'm literally going to write a note and tape it to the wall in the basement about that. Right now I'm trying to get the backyard bulbs, shrubs and trees watered before frost comes.
Regarding yards, another Fall task is to put peat moss around the base of roses and other shrubs, whether in the ground or in containers outdoors.
And install a carbon monoxide detector if you don't have one yet. Once you fire up the boiler or furnace, you'll need it for safety. If you have tenants, you have no choice, it's the law. Do NOT put it up on or near the ceiling like you do smoke detectors, as carbon monoxide is heavy and goes low to the ground. Put it above between knee-level and chest-level. Ours is connected to central alarm, and annoyingly they installed it too high like around 6 feet high. I wasn't around to see it so I couldn't stop them.

Don't forget to have a bag of rock salt on hand in case of heavy snow and ice, and also make sure that you have a good snow shovel.
Sounds as if you're well prepared...oh, stock up on staples for the pantry and paper goods... put on a big pot of homemade soup and enjoy your cozy home! :)

Buy yourself a case of red wine.
Hug and kiss your spouse and repeat as necessary.
Share a glass of wine.
You'll never be prepared enough; to loose each other.
Enjoy every night as it was your last one.

Make sure you check your gfi's in your bathrooms, kitchen, and outside in the backyard (if you have one there).I suggest having an electrician do a panel inspection at least once a year. We have club membership at Christoher John Electrical so we get this inspection for free. They also change our smoke detector batteries for free.
