Just to let you know, the front doors were stolen off of 116 Hancock Street last Friday, so if anyone tries to sell you doors make sure where they came from.

For real 11:44? Does that really happen? (My question is absolutely serious, by the way.)

Eddie, Grand and Greene.

Try the Olde Good Things website.

I'm assuming 116 Hancock is an empty/abandoned building?! Good grief.

It happens more often than you would think, more often with hardware. If you show a picture to someone and they say "I have it somewhere else, come back in a couple of days" where do you think it comes from?

I am stunned to hear that doors are being stolen, especially since I am having my doors replicated because the original doors were removed way before I purchased. I would die if they were ever stolen. Please let us know if in fact 116 Hancock is occupied or not? Geesh!!!

Before I decided to replicate the doors, I went to Eddie's. He has great stuff, but unfortunately he didn't have anything that would fit my entryway. Definitely give him a try. If you go to http://renovatingonthecheap.blogspot.com/ you can take a look at the doors that the blogger purchased from Eddie. They are great!

Back in 1984, the front door was stolen from one of our co-op buildings in the middle of the night.
Unfortunately it happens...

Eddie recommended Omar of Artistic Wood, 646-541-3409. Omar makes beautiful doors and is a first rate craftsman; he could copy these for you and install them. Very professional and meticulous. Omar remade some doors that I had and also made and installed custom moldings in my vestibule.

Is Omar of Artistic Wood reasonable?
Posted by: faithful at October 10, 2007 1:33 PM
Omar is reasonable. Not cheap, but trust me you don't want cheap. I got "cheap" doors, made by someone else. They were made of poplar, which was a big mistake and then I got somebody "cheap" to install them. I had a first class disaster on my hands and Omar made it right. I have learned that the cheapest choice is always the most expensive in the end. If I had gone to Omar in the first place, I would have paid a little more for the doors and installation, but in the end my cheap guys cost me a lot of money.
Good luck. Call Omar anyway and see what he says. He will probably suggest doors of sugar pine which is very sturdy for doors and he will make you the most gorgeous doors; he has his own shop with his partner Belda in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Good luck.

Sugar Pine is the softest of the pine woods. It is a excellent core but- very, very soft.

The exterior doors I'm having made are going to be mahogany. Is that okay?
Posted by: faithful at October 10, 2007 3:24 PM
I got a quote from Omar and it was too high for me.
I'd do 1. Eddie, 2. Vaccaro's on 15th bet. 2&3rd, 3. Zaborski's, Kingston, 4. Albany places
Obviously, call around before going to Kingston and Albany.

These are quarter & riff sawn oak doors & are beautiful. Cost Easily $3500 per door if the scroll work & detailed Astrigal is also required make it $5k per. If u live in a landmarks district then I assume u need to match all the details. Very few people make these locally. Try Heights Historic Window & Door I saw them install a unit on Tompkins place as detailed as this in Mahogany no scroll work though

Oh, why am I giving up my top secret source? Okay, Ebay. Do the search that constrains you to within 100 miles or whatever. I bought two pairs through Ebay. Good luck.

Moon River Chattel in Williamsburg has doors too. You'll need to do a lot of legwork to find the right design and size.
Mahogany is fine for a new door - it is the wood of choice for high quality replacement windows and doors. Its a shame, but its usually painted.

These guys can duplicate anything you have or had --
I have found what I think all Brownstoners would consider a Brooklyn Jewel.
Investigating a name under a table that I stumbled onto years ago, I finally found time to find the place--and what a find it was--absolutely amazing.
After owning my brownstone for six years, imagine - hand wood carving/duplication of anything, restoration, antique replicas, as well as custom made furniture detailed for your personal taste or desires. Anything you may have missing in "this old house" - they can do. Pieces of furniture made by them was also in Oprah's Magazine.
These gentlemen/owners are not youngsters by far, nevertheless are holding onto a tradition that will soon be past and forgotten. I probably would have fell to the floor if I didn't hold on. These/our Brooklyn Treasures should be held sacred to us and honored by all of us. Go See for yourself. Wanted to get this out for those getting their santuary in order for the holidays.
