Community for Rental Seekers
I'd like to suggest a section of Brownstoner be focused on people looking for apartment rentals who can converse from owner directly to potential renter without all the craigslist runaround. Anyone second the idea?

Great idea. It could be the fourth tab.

as a possible renter, yes, this would be nice to see!

Bad idea. What makes you think brownstoner can succeed in weeding out the brokers when craigslist cannot?

I agree with 6:22. I think Craigslist actually does a good job with rentals. Maybe it's just me. But maybe a rental forum specifically for rentals in brownstones? That seems like kind of interesting idea...

it wont work. the problem is that there are a lot more crappy apartments than good ones. The good ones rent quickly and the undesireable ones languish.

i think they can just institute a policy of no brokers and no fees. the posters would have to log in to post, and if they don't follow the rules, they will get blocked.

or... people looking to rent something will post their desires instead of the other way around. those looking to rent out their place can then shop around for the right tenant instead of getting bombarded with emails from a ton of random people. also, in any of these cases, a public thread that addresses everyone's questions in one place will make the process easier than having to approach each and every inquiry as a whole new endeavor

Brownstoner, do not even consider this. There are so many reasons this be a huge fiasco. The above poster is right, good apartments rent quickly, bad ones do not. Your listings will be filled with bad apartments by brokers posing as landlords. You will rue the day if you attempt this.

Hey guys - I just moved to New York and found this site this morning - i'm in the market for an apartment too - you may want to check it out: www.urbansherpany.com Looks like it does exactly that - gives you all the contact info for landlords directly as well as what apartments they have available.
