2/3 story extensions?
We're considering buying a 4-story house that is 17x47 garden and parlor level, but only 17x32 on top 2 floors. How expensive/hard is it to extend the top 2 floors so that they are as deep as the bottom 2?

It is really not possible to make an accurate guess of how much this will cost. Tons of issues: how much electrical and plumbing work will be required? One new bathroom, two or none? Will modifications to the back load-bearing wall be needed? etc....It's a big project, though. I'd bet it will cost you probably close to 100k, if not more.
What I would do if I were you is check plans for the house and see if the walls for the existing extension are sturdy enough to hold up two more floors. If not, you've got a big problem. When we put our two story extension on, we asked for sturdier walls that could hold a third story. I don't think it could hold a fourth, though.
Another thing to consider: don't underestimate how disruptive this kind of work will be....
