Toilet Question??
Everytime I flush my toilet I smell something funny like sewage soming from the toilet - (and it's not when I am taking a crap)anyone had any experience like this? anything I can do to resolve this issue?
Comments
We had this issue when we lived in California.
It was a REALLY old pipe to the sewer. It eventually needed to be replaced.
The yard was dug up and the pipe replaced.
N0t sure how that would translate to NYC apts.
Could get messy

Do you see bubbling in the plaster/paint on the ceiling below the toilet?
We did. Turned out we had to replace a section of the old lead pipe, the curved part, behind our 2nd floor toilet. Big crack in it. One plumber (Aladdin) couldn't find what was wrong, and insisted they'd have to open up the wall and ceiling below to locate the leak. Our regular plumber however simply removed the toilet, dug out the tiles, was persistent and patient, used a mirror and really searched. He found the crack, and replaced the pipe without having to rip up the wall below.

Sounds like sewer gases are escaping... probably a clog, or worn out pipes... call a plumber!

Every toilet should have a vent pipe connected within 2 feet of it's drain (except those on the top floor).
I would think your is cracked or separated.

we had the same problem, it was a clogged pipe to the sewer. we had to have it snaked by roto rooter because our plumber didn't have a snake that long. they get clogged due to grease, tampons, wipes. call immediately because it can become much more serious.

Sounds like you got "top shelfed." We used to do this in college. During a party, one sneaks off to the bathroom, removes the top shelf of the toilet, and drops a hot one in the top tank. Every subsequent flush delivers a nice stinky surprise as the formerly clean water infiltrates the toilet bowl. Please remove your toilet's top shelf and investigate. Definitely sounds like you got "top shelfed!"

that's also called an "upper decker" fyi
seriously though, there is a wax seal under your toilet where it meets the floor to prevent gases from escaping the sewer, if your toilet is older, this may become cracked. I replaced this myself and I'm no plumber. It involves removing the entire toilet though to replace said seal, which costs about $5 at the hardware store.
