Radiator: replace or repair
We have a leaky radiator that a plumber said would need to be replaced. I'd like to get a second opinion on whether or not it can be repaired rather than replaced. Does anybody have a recommendation on who can do a job like that? Also, if it turns out that we do have to replace it, can anyone tell me about how much it would cost? We have a hot water system.

In my experience, if the radiator is leaking at entrance or exit it can be fixed. If it's leaking at a place the sections meet or some place in the casting I would replace it.

it all depends where the leak is. If it is leaking from the valve, around the valve stem or at the valve coupling or at the air vent, the radiator is fine although you may need a new valve ( or simply get the valve "repacked" or the coupling nut tightened)
If there is leaking at the bottom of the radiator, at the joints between the sections, then it is garbage. When installing a new radiator, the plumber will install a new valve and air vent. The cost to provide and install should be around 750 total...perhaps a bit more. The iron itself is around 250, the valve around 30-40, the vent around 15 ...the rest is labor
good luck

I recently bought two used radiators at 653 Myrtle (between Bedford & Franklin). The price was $5 per section, so I wouldn't bother to fix an old leaky one.
Good luck.

Could someone post the contact info for the place at 653 Myrtle (name, phone number if available)? I want to call ahead to see when they are open and what radiators they might have available before the multiple subway & bus trip it will be for me to get there.
Or does anyone know of any other local sources for (vintage or vintage-look) radiators?
Thanks!
