Plaster Painting Dilema

Hi,

I am a modernist at heart. I can't decide how to paint my parlor. It has painted wainscotting, a plaster frieze, layers of moldings and many more layers of plaster on the ceiling with a huge oval in the center and rectangles on either side of that. I am torn between painting it all one color or trying to do something graphic with two colors. I do not want to do twelve colors or gold. Any ideas?

Thanks,
J.

If you are really a Modernist, use all one color, and something light, like a shade of white. All the relief in your details will show up via shadows. Your eye already goes to the details anyway, you don't need a color to draw attention to them. This way it keeps the room subtly beautiful.

However, if you are set on adding another color, everything should be the same color (white) except the walls between the wainscotting and the frieze which can be your color.

Just ideas...

Hello. I had some ornate platerwork in my first place I ever renovated. I painted all of it a cream color and used a deep cobalt blue to highlight the mouldings. It was a nice contrast and gave it a clean, modern look. Try getting some design books of modernist approaches in an older space. If you can find some books on Paris apartments, you will see examples of what I am talking about. Have fun!

Yeah I think 9:53 is the one who has bad taste. Moldings painted darker colors than the walls is totally acceptable, it's something that's done, and is certainly a good option for someone looking for a graphic, modern look.

If you email us a photo of this, we'll run it on the front page for discussion...
