Painting the front door

Which brand of paint is recommended for painting the front door? I use Benjamin Moore for all interior work.

Never used it myself, but I heard Fine Paints of Europe is good

Benjamin Moore (I used low lustre) is good for the outer doors, but the best is Fine Paints of Europe. Time will tell, but this paint is supposed to last much longer than any other. I did the research because I got new doors made in poplar --mistakenly -- poplar is more vulnerable than other species to moisture and I was advised to paint them with Fine Paints of Europe, which is supposed to protect the doors better than anything (more expensive than everything else). They look great and we'll see how they last. Good luck.

We just had our old oak front door painted. On our painter's insistence, we went with Benjamin Moore oil-based, high gloss paint. He says it's the best. We didn't want high gloss but he said he's painted many doors, and the glossiness fades quickly, and this paint lasts the longest. He said he painted another door across the street with acrylic low luster and it hasn't done well at all and will need a lot of touch ups (though honestly it looks fine to me but that's from afar, I haven't looked close).

Hope that's helpful.

All paints begin as a "gloss paint" in manufacturing. Silica (which is very soft) is added to the paint to change the luster. The duller the finish the softer it will be. You should begin with a gloss paint (which should be scuff sanded between coats) and finish with a satin or matte top coat(s). The same principal applies to finishing floors.

I totally support Donatella's endorsement of Fine Paints of Europe. Neighbors down the block had their front doors painted with it about 5 years ago and the finish is still in perfect condition. We plan to use it when we repaint our own door.
