Firewood: where to get it?

Folks-

A quick question. What's a great source for having firewood delivered?

I'm likely looking for a facecord or a half of a facecord and I'm looking for good wood -- well-seasoned, a mix of hardwood, etc.

Where do you get your firewood?

Thanks!

Peter

Cant remember where we got ours last time.

But once they delivered it and I was paying them what was the advertised price, they decided to add tax onto it.
I said fine, but give me a receipt.

They couldn't provide one, but would send one.
It never arrived.

I'm not adverse to paying sales tax, but they only accept cash and you know this went right into his pocket.

most brownstone fireplaces were designed for coal, not for wood. they also draw badly, and you can have other problems.

having said that, I chop the wood myself.

There's a place from Pennsylvania that puts flyers on cars in the fall. I recommend NOT using them, because they charge alot, aren't reliable in terms of coming when they say they'll come, and it was my experience that they left well short of a cord of wood but charged for that amount. check the yellow pages.....

I use these guys for firewood:

www.thewoodman.com

The wood burns well, they are reliable and they carry it up to my apartment and stack it for me.

I can't say if the prices are competitive as I haven't bought firewood anywhere else. It's not breaking the bank but is probably more than people pay in the suburbs.

I also buy cooking wood for my bbq smoker from them - they have a decent selection.

Depends on where you are. Also what people call a facecord really varies. I use Urban Arborists in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The wood is ok, their prices are good, and they are near me.
I did consider splitting a full cord with someone. Mahopac lumber has great prices, but I'd need a couple of people to split it with.

I call the local tree doctors or arborists in the Yellow Pages and who ever calls me back first gets my order. The only problem is, the wood is not truely seasoned (no matter what their ad says)so you need to get a delivery this year, and leave the wood in your yard for a year.

holy crap! I grew up in Vermont, and we heated our entire house with wood. A full cord, split and seasoned, cost $80. These companies charge $285 for a face cord, which is a third of a cord. That's over ten times the price. Seriously, I understand paying for convenience, but that's a bit much.

To 2:00 am -- check your calendar. It's 2007. Even wood in Maine costs $250 a cord right now. You've seen what's happened to oil prices? Well, people who can replace their oil heat with wood heat have done so, and firewood dealers have taken notice.

you guys are idiots. I sell wood in maine for $215 a cord, and thats more on the expensive side. If your crying about paying high prices, its because you havent done your research for the best deal
