Cost to install grass?
has anyone hired someone to seed a backyard with grass seed? if so, do you remember how much you paid them (per square foot or however its measured) and do you have a recommendation?
thanks a lot.

J & L Landscaping on Caton Ave. just seeded my front and back yards in Ditmas for $600.00. But I'll let you know if it grows!!!

Throwing down grass seed is child's play. Getting the grass to actually grow is all about what happens next, ie. careful watering. I overseed our lawn every spring and fall. Choose the right kind of seed for your exposure -- more shade tolerant varieties are available if you need. It helps to prepare the soil first: get the pH right, rake it, make sure it drains well (add soil conditioner, aka very fine mulch), tamp it down for a nice flat surface etc. If you can, go to a garden center or the Kensington stables and get some straw to lightly cover the seed (discourages birds and squirrels from eating it). I also use a fertilizer or "lawn starter". But the watering is critical. Heavy at first, then steady but not so much that it's a pond. It make take 2 weeks before you see any little green shoots come up.

I used J and L also 4 years ago. They were great. I used them because the lawn was not level and I didn't know anything about lawn matainance.
For the past 3 years I've reseeded in the fall and watered regularly so the grass would grow. I have had grass every year.
Good luck.
