clanking pipes

it seems that whenever our 3rd/2nd floor tenants take a shower the pipes really knock alot in the basement near the water heater. of course they wake up much earlier than us 5:30 to get a start on the day so it's really annoying trying to sleep through the clunking.
is there anything that could be done, like bleeding pipes or something?

Yes that means you need to do some maintenance. I don't know all the instructions, but it's something like opening up all the steam valves on the radiators throughout the building and bleeding them.

You make me laugh. First, you probably charge a really high rent, which is why you need to have the kind of tenants who get up at 5:30 a.m. - they probably go to work early and work really hard to pay the enormous rent.

Then you complain that they disturb you, when it is your failure to maintain your pipe system that causes the noise to begin with! Newsflash - it isn't your tenants making noise, it is your building systems....

Perhaps you are unsuited to living in a multi-unit building, or to being a landlord -many are.

One should ask think seriously about his/her ability to deal before buying a multi-family house, even if it is generally touted that you should let your tenants buy your home for you. Many aren't suited.

Why the hostility, 6:21?

I'm not generally hostile, and didn't intend to be here. But I find the landlord complaining about the tenants disturbing him laughable.

And it bugs me when landlords (I've had a few) don't realize that their tenants aren't just there to pay them - that they are responsible for learning about how their buildings work, and maintaining them.

While this one appears to be asking for help, he/she is really just complaining that his tenants get up too early and disturb him. Mentions the 'water heater' - doesn't say whether it is a water heater, or an old boiler; or if a boiler, whether it is water or steam-heated radiators. If he/she wanted help, should have been more specific. Probably doesn't even know.

The first response figured it was a boiler's heating up the radiators causing the problem, because indeed clanking will occur with certain radiators when the heat starts up if they aren't bled. Indeed, it may be the radiators heating up causing the clanking, not showering, and the tenants may be still be sound asleep.

Here is a link that may help you understand your plumbing a bit.

Hope it helps.

I'm taken aback at the 6:21, 6:56 poster. I clicked on this posting, because we have the same problem in our single family house: pipes that clank when someone takes a shower or runs the dishwasher. I'd sincerely like to know what the problem could be, as the original poster is asking. Leave your judgements and if you know the techinical answer - let's hear it. The original post doesn't mention radiators, boiler, etc - because that's not the question. The question is why would pipes clank when the shower is on and what, if anything, can be done about it.

why don't you all call a plumber

6:21, 6:56 you are a jackass.

i dont understand why people on a site to help eachother would take up so much time on space not helping. if you re read your own posts, there is clearly hostility and little effort to help. apologies are the moral necessity, imho.
