cellar trapdoor cover question

hi. i don't know what the word for this is, but many brownstones have a square 30x30 inch hole outside the front door leading down to the basement. many owners have diamondplate doors with padlocks on these holes. the old style seems to be a metal grate covered with a homemade looking lid, usually wood covered with metal, similar to what is often found atop hatchways leading to roofs. i have a grate but need a lid. where do i get one? getting a diamondplate door installed is $600 so i'm hoping to spend a lot less. thanks, andy

A carpenter can make a hatch cover for you. I had two of them made (one each for the front and back hatches), but it was so long ago, I don't remember the cost.

Try a company called Bilco or if you need something more industrial Neenah Foundry Co.
