Working Day Restrictions
Does any one know if there are rules about what time of day work in a single family dwelling/brownstone must stop and start? My GC and his team have been staying late -- like after 6 -- and my neighbor told him that they have to stop at 5? Is this true? I want to be a good neighbor but at the same time I'd like to know what the truth is about any restrictions that exist. Please advise.

Yes, your neighbors are correct.
A new noise law went into effect last month in the 5 boros. This new law specifies that it is "unlawful to engage in or cause or permit any person to engage in construction work other than on weekdays between the hours of 7am and 6pm." Weekends seem to be ok so long as you are doing the work yourself and are not causing noise disturbance close to a church or place of worship. The entire law is available at nyc.gov, search for noise, it's on page 13 of the PDF file.

So that means they have to stop at 6pm, then, not 5pm.

7am to 6pm weekdays. I beleive single family homes are not required to file a weekend work variance. Just tell your contractor to start and stop the job with "quiet" work.

The neighbor will complain if she can't afford your contractor.
If she can afford him she'll make hi's life misserable not yours.
