Taking a mold to match trim?
I've just finished restoring the woodwork and have some places where the wood was too damaged from pipes bursting and leaky windows to be salvaged. I've gone all over to match this trim but to no avail. Someone told me there is a place that will give me something to make a mold of the trim and then they can match the shape? Did I hear this entirely wrong? Anyone ever heard of anything vaguely similar?
Many thanks.

You will need to have custom made moldings made. The simplest way to do it is to use a carpenter (if you look in the archives, you'll be able to find someone). I'm guessing that you can also get a knife custome made so that you can make the moldings yourself. You could buy a profile gauge which looks like a fine tooth comb (each tooth moves so that when you press it against the original molding, you get an outline in the profile gauge). You then trace that outline onto paper and take it to someone who makes custome knives, or you take it to a molding manufacturing place to have the molding replicated.

Dyke's Lumber. They even have catalogs with pictures and measurements that you can take home.
