It's a larger job than you may think. When you remove the wall tile you will have to replace the sheetrock too. Toilet & sink would have to be removed and later put back. Call a few handymen and get some quotes and you will get a better idea of the scope of the work and the cost of this job.

Your bathroom has to be demo-ed and
re-sheetrocked ( like the guy said)
or you could maybe tile over the existing wall tile but that might not work.

When I did this it was about $4500 in labour and sheetrock/grout. Our bathroom was slightly larger (about 55 sq.ft) and also included installing all new bathroom fixtures and accessories, etc and we also had a separate shower stall. I would figure about $3,000 for your size bathroom (just in labour and sheetrock, assuming your only tiling half way up the walls where there is no shower). Whatever you do, don't cheap out on the labour. We decided to not change out a few things and now some of the walls don't align nicely. We wish we would have just removed all the sheetrock and redone the entire thing. But it's too late now.

Thanks to all....forgot to mention in the initial post that the walls are plaster! Was hoping that the existing tiles could be scraped from the wall and glue sanded down or removed with some sort of glue remover! Thanx!

If you have plaster, this is an original bathroom. I would imagine pulling the tiles off the plaster is going to leave you a real mess, large holes. You're better off springing for a whole new bathroom Remove everthing down to the studs and start from scratch.

you'll need to remove all the plaster and replace with greenboard. It'll never go smoothly unless you do that. I tried that and failed and now our bathroom looks "so so" instead of "great". It was also a nightmare for our contractor.

PS, mortar and grout don't remove with "glue remover" :)
