Dumbo. Is it Safe ?
So, before I get completely flamed, I am thinking of moving to Dumbo with my wife.
99 Gold has some pretty good deals, but I wanted to know what everyone's opinion of the projects near Dumbo is.
And is the park really starting to become a no go area at night ?
Comments
you better move in by 2pm today if you want to do so "before you get flamed"

Only Realtors consider 99 Gold to be Dumbo. It is actually Vinegar Hill.
The answer to the question of danger is subjective -- what makes you feel safe or unsafe? If walking through dimly lit, sparsely populated streets that are relatively far from public transportation gives you the willies, you're better off elsewhere.
Based on objective measures, the area is no more dangerous than 'proper' Dumbo, which is to say not dangerous at all -- even the park.

I live 100 yards from 99 Gold. I would not walk home alone past 1am.
The doorman area and sidewalks outside the building are heavily lit, and in fact have made the block a bit safer in my opinion.

Is it safe? It depends. I have lived in Vinegar Hill for a long time, and I have never had any problems. But, I am a man, and it can be different for a woman, esp. walking home late at night.
I have seen allot of people having sex in their cars in the neighborhood. I know of a few muggings that have taken place in the general area during the past few years.
More people are moving into the neighborhhod, and therefore more people are walking around.
At night, walking home alone, I would keep an eye on your back.

So I guess it's perfectly safe at 12:45 AM?

I live in Vinegar Hill as well and agree with the other posts. I don't think VH is any less safe than DUMBO, and I feel perfectly safe walking in the neighborhood at night. HOWEVER, you will have to get used to walking through completely deserted streets, which, if you are used to living in an area that has a lot of foot traffic at night, can certainly FEEL very creepy and unsafe.

On the positive side, if your car gets towed, you can just walk over to the pound. On the other hand...projects.

DUMBO is totally unsafe. Packs of roving yuppies and artistes leisurely stroll the streets at night making crude taunts about your clothing and choice of stroller. Don't even attempt to drive your SUV, it will be blocked in by flocks of Priuses whose drivers will demand to know your mileage. The park has all sorts of "those people" in it, at all times of day and night. And worse, there are projects.
Keyspan has a massive project tearing up the streets to add gas lines to the area (the yuppies must use a lot of gas). Walentas has a project to tear down much of the neighborhood around the gothic and much revered "chocolate factory" and build buildings for "those people" to move into.
You and your SUV would be much safer somewhere other than DUMBO.

I live on Gold between Front and Water and have lived there for over three years. I have never had problems and neither has my girlfriend. We both come home at odd hours, often alone. That being said I am always purposefully aware of my surroundings and people because there have been a couple of muggings over the past three years (what neighborhood hasn't had this though?) and the streets can feel lonely late at night. Since the arrival of 99 gold and the Vista there has been a noticeable increase of foot traffic and people walking dogs during the evenings and nights. I dont walk over to the projects at night and not often during the day. There are a couple of seemingly shady people presumably from over there that ask for money or just creep you out but generally the begging takes place in DUMBO proper and is harmless. I agree with 2:11 it's subjective because nothing terrible has happened to anyone (and its a close knit community so I think I would know) but it might feel more dangerous and unsafe to some because of the relative isolation and the projects. We had our hesitations too but now love the nabe and wouldnt move to a like building in another neighborhood. I am curious to know if anyone FROM the nabe has negative things to say. Anyone that dosent live there cant give sound advice. The same way I couldnt give advice about moving near the Ingersoll Houses in Ft Greene.

To hear tell, the relationship of people in the projects to wandering yuppies is like lions in the veldt with zebras at the river.
Do you ever hear yourselves talk?
Believe it or not, people in the projects mostly have better things to do. Like working to get out of the projects. This is New York City. You have to have street smarts no matter where you go.

This is New York City. The closer you are to the projects the closer you are to crime.

I guess that man that was stabbed in BayRidge when he went for some milk was close to the projects too huh? No...he wasnt. He was in an area with 2 family homes and porches. You are close to crime wherever you live. The NYU student murdered in her dorm was close to the projects huh? What a stupid statement. These days crime is rampant in the city, suburbs , everywhere. These are the end times. People are purely evil. Be aware of your surroundings at all times , at all places.

The Rapture already happened and we're all still here. Jesus only took the bees with him. Stupid bees.

Those projects look *very* unsafe to me... Half of them seem about to topple over!

Thanks for all the comments.
I was simply posting as a relative newcomer to New York. I live in the East Village, which itself I guess, is in close proximity to projects, if you could call them that.
I was just saying that the projects over at Dumbo, when we walked through them , felt immensely more remote, and therefore slightly more threatening.
I have been reading other comments on curbed, brownstoner etc etc and have heard them described as a 'war-zone', 'super gnarly', 'not an issue', etc etc
I spoke to a very informative woman who runs a dog walking company in Dumbo itslef, and she would not send anyone over to that part of Dumbo late at night. That pretty much said it all for us.
I'm not ready to pioneer that area just yet.

think about it this way: you said the building has some "good deals". why is that?
is there really such a thing as a "good deal" in NYC real estate?
if it seems like a good deal, there has to be a reason. location is your best bet.

Hey 1:17,
thanks for the google. I zoomed in, and saw someone in a lexus getting carjacked. You gotta love the web.

For 2:22 :
Obviously you've never lived near the projects.
