Duct Cleaning
I just received an estimate of $3,195 to clean the air ducts in my 4-story brownstone. Is this an appropriate charge? How often do you need to clean the air ducts? We have an oil furnace and forced air heat. I would really appreciate others sharing their practice. Thank you.

I'd suggest Googling "duct cleaning." There is no general agreement that duct cleaning is EVER necessary. "Scam" might be to strong a word, but still....
FWIW, I've lived in my 1899 house for almost 33 years without having the (mostly) original duct work cleaned. My son, born and raised here, never showed any ill effects from unclean ducts.
I DO vacuum the hot air registers (most years) before turning on the heat and, of course, i replace the filter on my furnace annually.

That sounds way too high. I did a 3300 sq foot 2 story house with 2 seperate sets of ductwork for just over $600. I used these guys, but not sure if they service Brooklyn:

I certainly wouldn't say it's a scam. You don't need to do it very often, and they try to upsell you on spraying a sanitizing agent inside the ducts, but easily take no as an answer. We did it because we did an interior renovation during the winter when the heat had to be on, and the ducts were visibly full of plaster dust. Afterwards, I could plainly see they were clean. End of story.

I agree with Bob Marvin. We have owned our 1899 4 storey brownstone since 1940 with original ductwork. It has NEVER been cleaned. Like Bob, only the filters have been changed and the furnace cleaned. Cleaning ductwork is a BIG SCAM!

Why not just stick a feather duster on the end of a stick?
