can i relight my boiler/ hot water heater?
our basement flooded with the massive rain the other day, and our water heater (gas) was submerged about 12", and the house boiler (also gas) submerged about 4". are they safe to relight? thanks!!

We had the same with our gas hot water heater, and I just let it dry out for a while, then re-lit the pilot. I have no experience with the furnace.

I would suggest, to be safe, to immediately have it checked out by a service technician .. the control system or gas control system could have been damaged.

i have the same problem with my hot water heater, but but relighting it myself scares me. after the heavy rain July 06 i had a plumber relight it, but it seems like it shouldn't really require a plumber, just someone with confidence in what they're doing. anyone know a handyman who could fix it?

This does not require a handyman or a plumber. It's like lighting your gas stove! Takes about a minute.

It is easy BUT if water has entered the gas feed line the gas pressure will not be strong enough to blow out the water and clear the line to restore gas flow.
Follow the instructions on relighting (simple) but if it doesn't light you need to call a plumber (he will go in and clear the line, etc., not expensive but not a DIY).
