bathroom gut reno - tiling behind cabinets?

Has anyone seen this as common practice? We are not tiling the entire wall, just up about 4.5 ft on walls outside of bath nook.

Yes. Thats what I did b/c we chose expensive tile and it looks great. We also used a wood molding on top to give it a more finished look.

if you don't put tiles behind your cabinet and you change your mind about your vanity, you'll regret not having tiles there. It's only a few extra square feet. do it.

Thanks. That's what the contractor said. But the tiles go up 4.5', above the regular sized cabinet, but we also have a "linen cabinet" at 8' right next to it -- will it look odd to have tiles going up only halfway on the tall cabinet?

Curious why you are putting tile on the walls at all. If you look at most contemporary baths, the trend is to tile the wet areas around the tub and shower and of course the floor. But to me this idea of tile half way up the walls is old fashioned, expensive and if the bathroom is small, makes it feel closed in. If you look at many of the new construction condos, they also avoid tile walls. I'm about to redo 2 bathrooms and will only tile in the shower and tub. I've previously done 2 baths in this same style and didn't miss the tile at all. Rather have sheetrock that i can paint or wall paper. Makes it easier to redo your bath without ripping out tile. Use timeless tile and then repaint every few years.

PS If you think you need tile near the sink because of splashing, do a small backsplash behind the sink. I did this in a powder room using the 1 x 1 floor tile and it looks great.

All the bathrooms I'm seeing lately have tile on the walls so I don't think it's out of fashion. I also disagree with it making a bathroom feel closed in. I think the reflective nature of tiles makes the room open up more.

New construction condos avoid anything that costs $$. Tiles keep your bathroom cleaner and keep out mold. wallpaper gets nasty. 1:06's method doesn't make any sense.
