Who to go to for lead test ?

We just bought a brownstone and are concerned that there may be lead in the house. We really are not sure and want to test for lead. Who can we go to for lead tests ? We have a daughter under 2 years old, so this is obviously a concern.

Anything built prior to 1978 has lead. The question is, is the paint chipping? Will you be doing renovations that involves lead dust getting into the air? If not, don't worry.

The paint is not chipping. However we have removed a bathroom and installed a kitchen its is place. We will build a deck off of the parlour floor and then will break into the wall enlarging the current windowframe to put in a door. These are the big renovations envisaged.

You should assume that the paint in your house has lead. You do not necessarily need a lead test but you do need to take certain precautions with small children. There is a lot of info on the web and I suggest you start with the City at nyc.gov and go to the Dept. of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Also, the state has DHCR and the feds have HUD.

Anyone with an older home, especially someone who is doing renovations should take precautions to avoid exposing yourself and your children to lead.

I was in the same position a few months ago. I used Habitat Safe Solutions. http://www.habitatsafesolutions.com

All he does is swab the areas and send them to a lab so a bit expensive but worth it.

You just have to keep the floors, etc. clean (wet wipe). Some info on levels below:

Lead dust must be less than EPA standards.

Floors
Dust levels should be less than 40 micrograms per square foot (40 μg/ft²)

Interior Window Sills
Dust levels should be less than 250ug/ft2 for interior window sills (250 μg/ft²)

Window Wels
Dust levels should be less than 400ug/ft2 for interior window sills (400 μg/ft²)

the contractors doing your renovation work should ideally be lead-certified, and you should have athorough cleanup done afterwards. I'd advise moving out of the bldg during the actual demolition and before cleanup.
