Tree Planting on Landmark Block

I live on a tree lined landmark block except that the tree in front of our house is gone. It hasn't been there in the 3 years since we've lived here. In any case, I'd like to plant a tree in it's place. How does one go about getting approval from the city to plant another tree? Or will the city replant for me?
Planting a tree will require some removal off concrete etc. It's not a small job.

Buy your own and plant it. See the link in the previous post re free application to plant and DOT permit to fix the sidewalk as necessary. Totally worth the investment as it will be good for your property value. Also you can do the research to ensure you get a realtively fax growing, strong and disease resistant tree. The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens will surely have advice they can give on good species to consider.
