stripping plaster moldings

We have elaborately detailed plaster crown moldings that have been painted over countless times. We have heard how expensive and labor-intensive it is to strip them. Has anyone had any experience with DIY stripping? They don't need to be perfect, just less paint-encrusted.

I had a handyman/friend do it for me; it took him a long time, since it is very tedious work. he didn't strip the whole thing, just some parts (had some SILVER paint on a detailed center medallion) and sanded the rest and repaired a portion. He used the usual Rockhard stripping stuff. Make sure to protect the floor well.
