Somebody to build an external balcony
We're thinking of adding an iron balcony and spiral staircase to the back of our Park Slope brownstone apartment to use both as a small balcony, and to allow access to the roof that is easier than the current metal ladder we have.
Who does this kind of work? Can anybody recommend a company that is trustworthy and concientious while not being outrageously expensive? Is that even possible in NYC?
Thanks!

Landmarked?

Landmarked? it's a backyard.
you can't swing a dead cat in Gowanus without hitting a metalworker.

Yes, even backyards are under LPC jurisdiction in landmarked neighborhoods and if your balcony and staircase is not approved you could get a neighbor that reports you. Refer to Home on this site to see the venom and fines that apply to offenders of the LPC (under "illegal painting").
I know that it seems insane. I applied for a permit for a spiral staircase off my already existing balcony and they not only held us up by insisting that our middle-of -the-block yard could be seen from the street requiring a public hearing, but rejected it.
Just reporting.

Yes, it is landmarked. It is amazing that it would matter given what people do in the back of their homes and painfully ugly extensions, decks and what not that are built.
there is no visibility from the street and several other brownstones have it across from us though....
If I go ahead, I will try to get a permit since I don';t want to deal with neighbors report me.

A deck takes, literally a day to assemble. By the time you get reported it'll be up . . . not that I would know anything about this kind of behavior. I read it somewhere.

We are also looking to build a deck off our parlour floor with a staircase to gain access to the garden. We already have landmark approval and have been quoted $20,000 by our GC which seems outrageous to us. Is there anyone out there that can actually recommend a reliable and reasonable iron worker that could do the job?

Call joe at ETNEA Iron (or is it "metal works") works. He does great work, efficient, and shows up when he says he will ( a small miracle in Brooklyn)

Try Petrillo Iron Work, 1718 254 0333, I love my deck, it's about 12 feet out by 20 ft high, its huge, and the guys are great, I had about 5 estimates before I hired them, and I saved about 2,300

Oct 3 9:13, BTW 20,000 USD IS outrageous. That is at least twice what it should cost (and maybe more). Get someone else to do the job for you and have your GC focus on other things... i still recommend Joe
