Paint Stripping Spindles, Doors

Has anyone used De Gamba for paint stripping? I need a bunch of stair spindles stripped (they're already removed), about 6 doors and probably some window and door mouldings as well. De Gamba quoted me $15 per spindle, which seems awfully high for something I am literally dropping off at their shop and picking up. He also quoted $200 approx. per door (large brownstone interior doors w/ four recessed panels) which seems about right. Any thoughts on those prices, or on the company's work?

I've used them a bunch of times. They do good work. I get sticker shock too. However there is a great deal of hand work to strip spindles and it's nasty work. So maybe with that in mind $15 per spindle isn't so bad. They have overhead & a need to make a profit too. Since you are having so much work done, maybe they can give you a discount?

I used them once. They did fine work and the price was agreeable. We did have a discrepancy over price (an extra $400 I had to pay), but in the end I was happy.
Thanks for reminding me of the name in case I need someone in the future again.

Stripping is a pain in the you-know-what. I think the price for the spindles is high, but not out of line.

However, when I had Design Interiors rebuild my stairs, they charged me $8 per spindle to make new replicas of my spindles to fill in gaps. Chances are they wouldn't charge that little without it being part of a stair job, but you may want to call them.

If they are standard, you can buy them new at home depot and paint them yourself

Thanks for the feedback. OP here. De Gamba came to the house today to quote on stripping window & doorframes in addition to the other stuff. Prices overall seemed reasonable considering how awful stripping is, and that having new moulding cut would run about 55 dollars per linear foot! For anyone who is interested, each door frame (1 side) costs about $350, so stripping both sides of a door frame runs $700. Window face moulding costs approx. $300 per window (not including shutter pockets). Obviously price depends on type of moulding. In our house, mouldings are big and heavy.
