Mosquito Spraying

Has anyone used a service to spray backyards with Pyrethrum (or another insecticide) to try to get rid of mosquitos? Am desperate for a solution here because our backyard has become unusable.

Sorry, I have no idea about insecticides. But mosquitos will breed wherever there is standing water, even an old tin can or flower pot. I've even read that they can breed in the water that collects in the horse's hoof-print! So if you can't solve that problem -- which could exist in all the yards adjacent to yours -- insecticides could be a waste of time anyway. Maybe you can reach out to your neighbors to encourage them to empty out (and permanently turn over) all receptacles. I downloaded some info off the Dept of Health website about West Nile disease and handed it out to some of my neighbors. See below: http://home2.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/wnv/wnvfaq2.shtml
It hasn't solved all our problems but I believe it has made a positive difference.

I have been using the blue zapper machine. The noise is theoretically annoying, but to me it is beautiful because every zap means one dead mosquito. I keep it on every night all night, even when we're not sitting out there, because I have a theory that mosquitos are actually territorial and if you reduce the number in a given area more won't fly in to replace them. Granted this is my theory but it seems to be working. I sat out in my garden last night without wearing deet and was not bitten once. A miracle!
