Asbestos in Basement
I believe we have asbestos covering pipes in our basement. I'd like to have someone come check it out to confirm if it is something to worry about or leave alone. Can anyone recommend someone to check it out?

Is it in a room you're going to be spending time in or is it in an out of the way area? If the latter, I'd suggest leaving it alone. An abstetos company will of course tell you to remove it at great expense and aggravation to you. Provided its not crumbling or being disturbed, its not posing a health hazard. Most older homes have abstetos somewhere...its par for the course in Brooklyn.

asbestos in pipe insulation can easily flake off and get into the air. i guess you could avoid your cellar but in the long run it's worth it to just have it removed. search the forum archives, Liam Hogan's team did mine and did a fine job, you'll see lots of recommendations for him on the forum. there's a reason asbestos has a negative connotation, and it will hurt the resale value if nothing else motivates you.

Encapsulate all of it in plastic wrapping. I double -wrapped the pipes with clear plastic sheets(36" x 36" x 1 mil). This will protect it from any damage. Also you can see if it is being disturbed. That done you are free to take all the time you want to decide how to deal with it.

I had a gentleman by the name of john rodriguez from final cleanup come and remove the asbestos in my basement, and i just wanted to submit a general recommendation. he came over to inspect, gave me an estimate, and he was able to bring his crew only a couple of days later. they had it all taken care of AND FOR A QUARTER OF THE PRICE OF WHAT THE OTHER GUYS WERE TRYIN TO CHARGE ME .i have no problem givin you there number 347 996 6148
but yeah you should have it removed as soon as possible and if there is construction going on the utilities company will not come they will deem it "unsafe work area "is what con ed and key span told me so give him a call .
GOOD LUCK

You can take a quarter-sized sample to a local lab and they can do an analysis for about $20. If it is is asbestos you should have it removed.
We use Liam for removal: 917-843-3367. He wont do the work unless it's necessary, so it might be worth it to bring him in as confirmation that it is asbestos. You can tell him Ari referred you.
Good luck.

BTW: if you do take a sample yourself, be sure to wet the area down with water before you cut it. asbestos is dangerous when it is "friable", or can pulverize...wetting it will keep dust to a minimum.

I second John rodriguez from Final clean-up -
He and his partner neatly removed all of the asbestos from my basement, he also stripped the
lead off and repainted 2 heat risers for a fraction of the price others recommended on this forum quoted me.
