Update: "NYC won't let me cut down my own damned tree?!"
Too late, Nanny State--it's gone. Forum readers might recall a debate a couple weeks ago in this space about the 50-foot pine tree in our front yard, crowding a much prettier tree and totally obscuring our house. We sought an estimate from Prospect Tree--the guy refused to touch the pine, saying it "might be a city tree" even though it was clearly on our property. He then bid $1300 to do some pruning on two other trees in front and back. No thanks. (Obviously he didn't want the job.) We then got a bid from New York Tree & Shrub Co. (718-358-4728), which sent a crew three days later, took out the pine, did a great job on the additional pruning, and charged $600 total. Cleaned up nicely, too. Highly recommended. Yard looks 100% better. Cheers!

Wow. Congratulations. That's a good price too.
Did you check Department of Parks records? I am guessing no.... Just curious.

Yard looks much better now and you can see the house. It was way overgrown. Good luck!
Just a friendly neighbor, not anybody from Parks Dept:)
See you on the garden tour.

Thanks for the affirmation, Anon June 1 (I knew you were going to catch me sooner or later... gotta stop drunk-posting!) Donatella, we saw no need to check Parks Dept. records, because the tree was only 35 years old or so, and we weren't looking for someone to tell us not to do what so clearly needed to be done. It was obvious to anyone that the tree was an eyesore that needed to go. The remaining prettier tree will be healthier for it.

Bravo. Good for you. I made a note of NY Tree and Shrub. That is an excellent price. I had Urban ARborists scale my monster norway maple to take down two large limbs which cracked during the Nor'Easter. Three guys, four hours, 1000 dollars. Anyway, enjoy the sun.
