Skim Coating
So we just closed on a new apartment and now that the owner's stuff is out, and we can finally see the walls, we see that there are lots of little holes (and some bigger ones), etc. What are the advantages of skim coating, as opposed to just spackling and painting over all of this? Any idea of what it costs to skim coat a room? Thanks so much!

It sounds like you really just need to patch the holes with spackle or compond, sand & paint. Skim coating whole walls in a room is a big project. With skim coating you're resurfacing your walls. I wouldn't bother if the damage to your walls is small.

Same thing happened to us but we decided to spackle and paint. In retrospect, I wish we would have found the money and skim coated the apartment (because you'll never want to do it once you move everything in!) Make sure you take a good look at the walls - if its truely just holes, spackle - but when we made our decision, we were looking at the overwhelming number of holes and overlooked the number of long cracks, which spackling is not great for. We had so much spackling, sanding and priming that it added a good 3 days to our painting process and although our walls look a lot better, they're still not great.

skim coating is nice...but its often an unnecessary upsell by contractors. If they spackel correctly...it should come out nice.
