Hudson Valley Cottage
I'm thinking about looking for a small cottage up the Hudson. Need a place to escape to. Been living in Brownstone Brooklyn apartment for years, without outdoor space. Anyone familiar with Rhinecliff, Tivoli, Red Hook areas? Anyone living up there who would like to list some Pros and Cons. Any former Brooklynites who have moved, or who have a second home up there, I would love to hear your advice. All comments appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Its a great area (I have a place about 30 minutes further north near Hudson). One big advantage (at least from my perspective) is access to Amtrak (in Rhinecliff for the areas you are considering), which is ocnvenient if you plan on having houseguests without cars or want to just keep a car upstate. The area around Rhinebeck, Red Hook & Tivoli not only has many ofht advantages of being in the "country", it also has a lot of cultural activity by virtue of its proximity to Bard and related institutions (plus easy access to Target across the bridge in Kingston!). I'm trying to think of a con--maybe the deer and ticks (a lot of Lyme disease)? prices (it is not inexpensive)?

Thanks for your input. Going to take a drive up later in the week. There are many, many Realtors in the area. Do you recommend any in particular? Thanks.

I am not as familiar with the realtors in Dutchess county--I would make appointments with two and see who you like the best (they have MLS, so for the most part, any realtor can show any property unless it is an exclusive). See who has listings that sound interesting and affordable to you.
There is a great little Italian place in Red Hook whose name is escaping me, but would be terrific for lunch or dinner (maybe Mercato or something like that). Very casual and very authentic. You might be able to find it via google.
If you are up on July 4 (and the weather cooperates), Clermont is a great place to bring a picnic, hang out, listen to music and watch fireworks over the Hudson.
(In the Hudson/Columbia County area, I have heard good things about Gary DiMauro, Peggy Heinkein and Peggy Lampman)
Good luck!

Also, had been looking on all 3 Real Estate sites.
Very interesting browsing.

If you decide to look across the river, which is what we ended up doing (it's less expensive and still wonderful), Josh Luborsky at Freestylerealty.com is great. Tell him his little Brooklyn buddy sent you.

Across the river, do you have any comments on Catskill? There are some nice Victorian Village houses online. Thanks

Hi Anon
I am actually selling a Victorian farmhouse in Livingston, Columbia County. It is the 'Myron Schermerhorn house' on the Gary DiMauro website.
