Help, we're melting!
Best ac units for garden level brownstone apartment with bars on the windows?
Comments
The freestanding units with a venting tube that goes out the window are very effective. They can leak and do nasty things to the floor so get some plastic to go under it. Be cool.

Much better is to get a rear-venting ac. It'll need to be installed by a professional (unless you're superhandy). You buy a sleeve to go with it and though usually they go in the wall this way they can be put in a window. We're getting an lg model ($400 +$80 for installation, $70 for the sleeve) put in by the guys on 7th ave and 12th tomorrow.

Are you planning to AC the whole apartment or just a bedroom? We live in a garden level apartment with window bars, and decided that the bedroom was the most important thing.
We didn't want to get one of those venting floor model things, because space is really premium.
There used to be super shallow window A/Cs but they stopped making them, but we found one at a stoop sale for $50 and are happy, cool cucumbers at night. I suggest you scour the internet and stoop sales.
During the day we have window fans at both ends of the apartment and leave the bedroom door open so there's ventilation and the cats don't melt.
Hope this helps.

We went to J&R appliances on 7th Avenue near President in Park Slope. They installed a Panasonic model that blows the hot air out through the back. The unit isn't very deep - but the bulk of it is inside the apt. as it goes right up against the window bars. Works like a charm and comes in different BTU's depending on the sq footage you want to cool.

We cut 3 bars at the height of our A/C in the bedroom window.....

Buy the through-the-wall unit with the sleeve (I have three Friedrich's) and prop it on the window sill with the back-end outside. You have to construct wings to seal the window(I use insulation batts trimmed to size).
Of course, this unit, plus a sleeve, is more $$$ but works fine.

Just close all of your doors and windows and close your shades during the day - since you are underground it will stay comfortable without a problem - up to about 100 degrees that is.
