Brownstone repair

I Recently moved into my home I wanted to get the Brownstone stairs that are original patched up There are a few cracks. The engineer told me they could be patched, every brownstone Repair contractor guy I come upon says they want to break the stairs up and chisel it back to the original stone. I do not think this is the right thing to do because there a few cracks and i like the original look.Any suggestions?

They say that for 2 reasons:

1) cracks and chips can be patched, but the color of the patching material will never match and will eventually come loose (even if painted).

2) they will make between $4K and $10K for doing your entire stoop as opposed to much less for patching.

If there are really just a few cracks, leave it alone until it gets worth the money you'll be paying.
