You can legally turn off the heat May 31.

The heating season begins October 1st and extends until May 31st.

What a cheap bastard question.

Sorry OP, but I have to agree with desk sgt.

I felt so glad after reading your inquiry that I have been a co-oper for the past 24 years, and no longer at the mercy of a Lord Of The Land!

Why is that a bad question? The poster wants to obey the law and is asking what it is? I turned off the heat in my house two weeks ago - seems warm enough to me. If I were a co-oper I would want the heat off as soon as possible as well in order to keep my maintenance down. I hate the wasteful habits of New York apartment buildingws which are overheated and people keep their windows open to regulate the heat.

Then the OP should have phrased his question differently.

Like, "when is the heating season oficially over?".

Posted by: desk sgt. at May 8, 2007 10:40 PM

what are you, looney toones? that's the question he asked!

You must be a big supporter of our current president. At least you seem to share his same reading skills.

OP used the word, "legally" which indicates he doesn't care if the heat will be necessary or not, he plans to shut it off on that date regardless.

Phrased differently, well ..we already talked about that. There'll be a catch-up class next fall.

Seems to me that the OP is doing the right thing by asking the question.... desksgt is making assumptions....and you know what they say about that...

Foolish response to a legitmate question.

Well I own a 4 family brownstone and it's very expensive to heat, especially with the prices of everything going up. Try paying $1200 a month for heat and then you can talk.

Calling anyone a supporter of our current president is a pretty harsh insult . . . and over a legitimate question no less!

Desk sgt: can you please let us know where to send our postings so that you can vet them and make sure we meet your standards? Or if that is too difficult, maybe you could just start assuming the best of people rather than the worse.

you should take classes for landlords at hpd...they're free

Well, I am the president here, and I turned off the heat in The White House just last week in time for the Queen to visit. Just be happy you're not heating that place! Ta!

"..maybe you could just start assuming the best of people rather than the worse."

I see you haven't been around people lately.

Wow, desk sgt,, are you for real or are you just playing at being a curmudgeon for entertainment value? Since you've made it clear that you will continue to attribute the worst of motives to people, where can we send our postings to be vetted by you?

Come on, admit you jumped the gun, and owe "op" an apology, come on, come on, yes there it comes, yes I can see the smile, yes I can see you say "sorry I posted before my first coffee" or sorry I have bad arthritis and heat is a real personal issue for me. Come on, you can treat others nicely. Sure you can...

"HEATING SEASON

Heat must be supplied from October 1 through May 31, to tenants in multiple dwellings if: a) the outdoor temperature falls below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, between 6 A.M. and 10 P.M., each apartment must be heated to a temperature of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit; (b) the outdoor temperature falls below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, between the hours of 10 P.M. and 6 A.M., each apartment must be heated to a temperature of at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. (Multiple Dwelling Law § 79)"

That's where you want your thermostat set :)

Seems like a legitimate question to me. The heating season certainly encompasses the time period in nyc when anyone would need heat, so why on earth would anyone 1) want to pay for heat that isn't necessary, and 2) deplete any more of the world's oil/natural gas than necessary?

Would the sign of a 'good landlord' be that they provide heat in the warm weather?

In any case, thermostat settings higher than required by law wouldn't have kicked on the heat since the second week in April, so the question would appear to me academic.

"Since you've made it clear that you will continue to attribute the worst of motives to people,.."

You're only saying that 'cause you're EVIL.

thanks for the information

The reason i asked this question is because it was 70 degrees out and my tenant puts the heat on and the windows are open. I allow him access to his own thermostat.By the way desk sgt ,your a jerk !
