New to Bay Ridge
We are a retired couple in our 60s and are looking to rent in Bay Ridge. We've heard good things, but don't know the area too well. Would like to be within walking distance to a supermarket, drug store, bank and shops (don't need to be close to bars or restaurants) and prefer quiet streets with low car traffic. Also prefer to be close to the subways. Can anyone recommend a specific area within Bay Ridge we should concentrate our search?
Thank you for you time.

The high 80's through the 90's are the best blocks. Between 3rd Avenue and Shore Road. Concentrate on those areas. There are a couple nice supermarkets in the 90's on 3rd Avenue. There are R subway stops at 95th and at 86th. And there's an express bus that stops on Shore Road in the 90's and 80's.
If you can swing it, try and get an apartment on Shore Road so you have a nice view! And easy access to the park. You'll enjoy Bay Ridge for your retirement. Good luck.

Yes, agree with 1:44. The 80's and up, between 3rd ave and shore road is a really nice area. Many supermarkets and restauraunts on 3rd (there is a Foodtown at 3rd and 92nd, and a Key Food at 3rd and 94th - I am sure there are more in the 80s, but I live on 90th so pretty much stay in that area). Most of the streets are pretty quiet with not too much traffic (as long as you do not live on one of the avenues - the streets are fine) except for some jackasses once in a while who think they are on a race track (why they need to try to drive 50 MPH on a small one way residential block is beyond me). The subway (R train) is on 4th Ave and the express bus to Manhattan goes along Shore Road and then cuts over to 3rd ave around the 70s.

We're on 79th at 3rd ave. If you can go below 3rd ave, it is more quiet even down in the 70s. There is a small, but very nice Associated supermarket on 3rd and 79th. Within one block we have Riteaid and a local pharmacy, and a bunch of other useful stores.

live on 79th between ridge and colonial. stick in the mid-70s, 80s and 90s between shore road and ridge blvd - very quiet blocks. train is on 77th, 86th and 94th streets and 4th avenue. most of your shopping and restaurants are within walking distance on 3rd and 5th avenues as well as 86th street.

I live on 74th bet. 3rd & 4th. I agree with all the posters above, but would add not to neglect the mid-low 70s streets (there's a subway stop on what is essentially 69th street too). Tons of conveniences on 3rd ave, including 2 supermarkets, a couple little grocery stores, Eckerds drugstore, NYSC gym, restaurants, and a few smaller name banks (and this is only from 71st to 75th Street alone!) Public library on 73rd street and Ridge Blvd (aka 2nd ave). But 5th ave is also great for stores and restaurants, only there's no big supermarkets.
As for quiet: I think Ridge Blvd (2nd ave) is quiet without being too far from subway. Anything below is very pretty but seems a longer walk to me to subway (especially in winter). Also, if you are retired and going to be home alot, mind if your new home is near a school, cause kids and traffic can be noisy at certain times. Some schools : PS 102 (Ridge Blvd & 72nd-71st streets), OLA (73rd-74th streets bet 3rd&4th ave), Fort Hamilton HS (84th-85th street & Colonial Ave, I think???)
Good luck!
