fire on 5th ave btween 2nd and 3rd

coming home last night around 12:30am i saw what looked like a huge fired on fifth avenue between 2nd and 3rd streets. two questions: a) anyone know what the story with the fire was? anything we can do to help folks who live(d) there? b) i hope that this isn't too stupid of a question, but this morning i woke up to a slight sewage-esque smell in my bedroom. could that be related given that i live around the corner and the smell is not as bad in the front of the apartment?

I wonder if all the water that's pumped out and goes into the sewers caused the sewers to back up a little in surrounding buildings. I've never thought about that before.

Sad to hear this news! Hope everyone is okay. And their pets too, if the pet owners were out on a Saturday night. We should worry about humans first, I know, but I always think about the animals inside the buildings too. I know when I've lived in apartment buildings and the fire alarms go off it's surprising how many people would run outside and not bring their pets with them. It's another good reason to always keep a collar on your pets; because then at the very least you can leave the door or window open and let them run free to get away in a fire.

My boyfriend is a firefighter. I have a photo of him and another firefighter holding a giant rotweiller that they rescued from a building. They brought him down in the bucket that is on their firetruck! It would be bad to leave a door open when escaping a fire: that is a big way to spread a fire and is a factor in the deadly Bronx fire recently.

Damn! I own a brownstone on 5th between 5th and 6th. Gotta go around the building tomorrow and check out the demage done between 2ed and 3ed. If anyone know's what the extent of the damage and what caused it...id love to know.

Luckily no one was hurt and the damage was limited to the roofs of two buildings (I live in one of them). Don't know what started it, but it originated and burned the most on the other building - they're going to investigate this week. Definitely one of the most terrifying events of my life.
