WINDOW HELP !

Depserately need window advice...replacing crappy old windows in brownstone with new. not sure if i should use pella, marvin, anderson, etc...my contractor told me he needs to set up staging outside the entire building (as well as get a permit) to install them from the outside. i thought they could be installed from inside ? we'd like to use wood interior and exterior, and instead of aluminum cladding weather proof the exterior with wood casing (painted). is this why we need staging on the outside of the building ? any advice how to do this work ? please help ! thanks.

I had Marvin all-wood windows installed. Some were just inserts (relying on the original wood frames); others were complete brick-to-brick installations. All were installed from inside the house in the dead of winter. No staging necessary.

I think that you should ask someone else.Staging for window installation sounds out of question for me.

It depends on interior construction. Definitely get a second opinion. If the windows are larger than the interior window framing, you may need to install them from the outside. It depends.

Also "wood casing" on the exterior must involve more work and may not be able to be done properly working from the inside. Makes sense to me.

Is your property in a historic district? If so, your choices of windows must conform to the Landmarks Commission guidelines and be approved by them. Call them and they will help.

My husband and I are having all of our windows replaced, frames and all. We are using Jeld-Wen all wood windows since we are in a Landmarked street. My contractor put in a test window and had to do it from the outside. It is down right impossible to do it any other way if you are replacing the frames as well.

If this is a Landmark Home it need Landmarks approval. Full units can be installed from the Interior leaving the Interior Moldings in Place with proper safety line's attached to workers. Have Seen the work being done on South Portland 2 homes full unit rip out & Installation. The Window manufacturer was Kolbe & Kolbe Installers I saw a sign For Heights Historic Window & Door. look's marvellous now it is all painted & it looked like a very difficult install. The homes had there brownstone done also. But definitley saw men installing from the insde of the house.

Peatman,

Why post in the third party? You pay to advertise here, you are well respected in the trades, you have also backed yourself up from a not so happy customer in a very professional manner. Chime in and promote.
