This site is an embarassment
I surf the web far and wide, but I've never ever seen a site that is so difficult to post to. It's just not possible that ths super-annoying quintuple post problem -- which has been going on and on and on and on for months and months and months and months -- is not solvable. Hey Brownstoner, why don't you get yer ass off the couch in your Music Room, take some of that cash that Adam Tibbs is paying you for the ad space, and hire a 14 year old with a 110 IQ to fix this site once and for all?!?
Yours,
Fed Up
and not to mention that i can just come into your post and change it like this. There should be a login. Movable type is good for a personal blog but not so much for a public forum. Use a PHP board, its so simple.

Are you developmentally delayed? Just hit submit once. Period. That's it. Brownstoner has done a terrific job and is only improving this site daily but I can also imagine that he's enjoying his family and has ummmmm I don't know, a life maybe?

Who's more "developmentally delayed" -- this frustrated poster, or the guy who posted "2 fam to a 3 fam, need a little advise" EIGHT FRIKKIN TIMES?
Every site in the blogosphere is run by someone who has a life, but none of them has this problem.

I totally agree with the OP - Brownstoner's lack of attention to the usability of this site is verging on pathetic.

He went to Princeton, not Harvard. What do you folks expect?

For what it's worth, I suspect that if Brownstoner moves to PHP he will loose much of the advertising space he has here.
Right now the site may be somewhat profitable. That's not a bad thing.
Anyway, are you really "embarassed" by Brownstoner.com?
I'm sure you get much more out of it than you put into it.

It's not a matter of advertising. If we switch to php we will lose 2 years of archives. We're working on a MT-based solution that will save the archives. Sorry it's taking so long but that's it's not a simple task.

You're an embarrassment because you don't even know how to spell 'embarrass'! Chill out -- no one wants to read you ranting post on this site. As mentioned already, just hit 'post' once - how hard is that?

i must have missed the part where everyone is paying for this site. oh wait, it's free.
make my free stuff better! waaaaahhh!!

Brownstoner: as a programmer i don't see any technical reason why you can't put in SOMETHING to alleviate this problem!!! Also brownstoner i don't know how you store the archives (or the posts) for this site but unless its being stored in some very bizarre proprietary format there should be no reason why it can't be ported to another system. I don't know who is telling you this but maybe you should get a 'second' opinion.

I agree, I think this site is very poor. Also, its gotten worse over the last month or so; its significantly slower to load than in had been. Yes, it’s a free site, but, its getting to the point that its not worth the bother to come to the site. The multiple postings is the fault of the site, not the viewers. The ads on the right hand side of the site seem to keep moving into the text.. anyway, for me, if the site isn't improved soon I will stop coming to it, which is a shame because it could be a nice place to discuss issues we all as brownstone owners have in common.

The site has become MUCH slower recently. I definitely visit it less.
The OP makes a valid point, if uncivilly.
The fact that the site is "free" does not mean it is not a for-profit site. A lot of media is "free" with an advertising supported model. The fact this it is free does not give the owner of the site a pass. There is advertising on the site, and the number of hits makes the advertising worth more. If the site were more user friendly, there may be more hits.

I wouldn't worry about the lost archives. Chowhound worried about that for 5 years and the problem just got worse and worse.
Brownstoner is young enough that you should just move to the best solution as quickly as possible and the archives will build back up quickly enough.
Peter
P.S. As far as PHP vs. MT, I'd go with whatever has the best overall forum capabilities... search, identities, post editing, new posts flags, etc. I suspect that PHP.

Brownstoner: switch the forum(s) to phpBB or SMF, you can use the MovableType PHP libraries to pull headlines or whatever else you want to pull from the forum into the blogspace.

As far as the forums are concerned, who cares if there are archives? The way it is set up now, unless your post is at the top of the pile, no one sees it or posts responses to it. If you dig up a post from two years ago with the topic you have question about and then post the question, no one will see the new question. So you have to start a new topic.
With a phpBB, any time you post to the topic it come back to the top of the list. So that way you don't have to have 20 topics asking and answering the same question and the forum become more useful.

My son is 15 with an IQ of 109. I think it's a gross misconception that a 15 with such an IQ could possibly fix this problem. I love my son, but he's struggled to program even the most basic HTML tags. I seriously advise anyone with web problems to steer clear of my son and his like. He's lovable and affable, good at sports, can complete his public school homework (most of the time), but attention to detail is not his strong suit, especially after eating a bag of skittles. Do yourself a favor and hire a twenty-something nerd/virgin with an IQ over 125. Worth the extra money.

For a free site, it's actually pretty good. Quit yer bitchin'

Anon 10:04, by the time I got to "skittles" I was choking on my Diet Dr. Pepper.
