Armory @ Sumner & Jefferson
Please can someone tell me why we have the Armory on Sumner (Marcus Garvey) and Jefferson, that apparently has a full swimming pool, gym facilities, basketball courts etc. inside, lying empty? If such a facility was in Manhattan don't you think there would be a public outcry and something would be done? The community is crying out for a space like this, yet it just remains as a hostel for transgressors. Great! I hate to make it a race issue, but it kind of makes you think doesn't it? Does anyone know why it is empty, and what we can do?

The city owns it and apparently uses it as a homeless shelter and offices.

Thank you, that is an interesting article. I wonder weather the homeless and people who use the offices are incredibly fit!
Or does that mean the facilities are just being left to decay?
Seriously though I understand that the homeless need somewhere but I think our neighborhood may need facilities a little bit more. This is a residential place. But thanks again for the article.

well I guess emergency shelter is the more technical term for its current use. I noticed that a new or refurbished YMCA has opened in the area and maybe community leaders think that is enough.
I've perused one of the council distric reports from a couple years back and it does get a bit depressing with the issues raised and the lack of progress all over Brooklyn towards public land use. Apparently Brooklyn doesn't even meet the city's mandated park area requirements.

probably the best bet to get public use out of this space would be to partner it with a private fund source. I think Nike sponsors a basketball leage at Washington Hall Park every summer: would it be distastefull if the building were to become the Nike Armory?

That is a great idea Girgis. I just wish that someone who was good at those things would do it. I would gladly sign a petition or march for it. It just seems a shame because the people here and the area would really benefit from that facility. I would welcome corporate sponsorship seeing the Brooklyn council seem unable to get it together.

I really think something should be done. It is a really great facility for the kids as well as the adults around here. I really think we should find a way to do this. It would be a great opportunity for the newcomers to meet with the people who from the beautiful heart of Bedstuy. I'm already excited!

I don't know if this is simply rumor or wishful thinking, but my realtor told me that the Armory on the corner of Atlantic and Bedford is closing. He said it would become a community center. Although this could have been a ploy to get me to buy in the neighborhood!

My realtor told me the same about the Sumner Armory 3 years ago!
Anyone know who we in the community could write to about perhaps getting something done?
